Editor’s Note: Nyam & Trod, was originally intended to be a plant-based magazine called the Caribbean Flexitarian©, produced by Meatless Monday Jamaica. Sid Lerner, founder and chairman of this international climate change movement graciously agreed to write the foreword of the magazine. However, as mentioned in my welcome video, I had to pivot and change the brand due to unforeseen circumstances. My commitment to Meatless Monday Global, however, remains strong. I have been active in the movement since November 2011. As you would have noticed, being a practising flexitarian, this website’s recipes are 70% plant-based and will remain so. Meatless Monday encourages omnivores to practice a reducetarian lifestyle, and with our planet’s environment in peril, going meat-free from time to time is a simple and positive way in contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases. Nyam & Trod’s Meatless Monday section of the website is dedicated to vegan and vegetarian recipes.
We congratulate Jacqui Sinclair, the JuicyChef and Meatless Monday Jamaica on the launch of The Caribbean Flexitarian ©. Jacqui was one of the earliest leaders in the Meatless Monday global movement and has a long history of promoting Meatless Monday, as a chef and an advocate. Through this work, she’s been able to demonstrate how traditional Jamaican methods such as jerking, adding curry as well as other indigenous spices can be used in plant-based cuisine.
It is wonderful to see the Meatless Monday message of cutting meat once a week for personal and environmental health, make its way around the Caribbean, starting with Jamaica. We commend the Meatless Monday Jamaica team for bringing this positive and inclusive message to the local community through advocacy, practical advice and recipes.
Meatless Monday is a global movement active in over 40 countries and The Caribbean Flexitarian will help the region become a leader in addressing the environmental and health issues associated with meat consumption. Globally, greenhouse gas emissions from livestock are higher than the entire transportation sector and many countries, especially island nations, are also experiencing more extreme weather events. At the same time, many countries are seeing rising rates of diabetes and heart disease. We are proud to see the JuicyChef via Meatless Monday Jamaica and The Caribbean Flexitarian © movement encourage simple and easy steps to reduce weekly meat intake with delicious plant-based recipes. Congratulations Jacqui!
